BOLTSM: Dairy Matings to Limit Inbreeding
The BOLTSM program addresses your concerns about dairy cattle inbreeding. It scans each cow’s pedigree to identify close relationships between the cow(s) and your chosen list of mating sires. The program report notes the bulls NOT to use in order to limit inbreeding (those that would result in an inbreeding level greater than 3.125% if mated to a specific cow). If all bulls meet the inbreeding limits that would be signified in the report as well.
When using the BOLTSM program, your herd can be divided into groups for specific breeding strategies and each group can be mated to different sires accordingly. The program conveniently provides negative matings for an individual or whole herd (by pen, lactation and/or cohort groups) as long as pedigree information is available. Mating recommendations from the BOLTSM program are easily imported into dairy management software.
